FAQ for Afro’Robics:
Q1 - If I have registered for an entire series at one community centre and I miss a class, can I make up for that class by attending another one at a different community centre?
Answer - No. When you sign up for a series at one centre, you are paying that specific centre. Community centers are independent from each other and revenues for programs are not shared therefore if you want to attend a class at a different centre, you will have to pay a drop-in fee. The cost of the series is designed so that you are getting the value of more than one free class when you compare to what it would cost to pay the drop-in fee each time ($15x6=$90 vs. cost for 6-week series $69). Therefore even if you have to miss one class, you are not loosing any money.
Q 2 – Do you have levels at your classes?
Answer – The classes are meant to reflect some of the values that are important in the African culture. In a village, we all dance together, men and women, children and parents, grandchildren and grandparents. We can share the same music and dance steps regardless of each person’s level of experience or fitness. Therefore the dance has to adapt to the dancer, not the other way around. In my classes, each person is encouraged to listen to their body and dance according to their own ability or preference.

FAQ for Soukouss:
Q1 – I cannot come to all the classes but I’d like to drop in to a few. Is it OK?
Answer – We will practice several movements and combinations, and learn a choreography. Each class will build on the previous one therefore it is necessary to maintain consistency with the attendance. For that reason, even though it is possible to drop-in for the very first class ($20), you will have to sign up for the entire series if you wish to continue (unless you have taken this program before).
Q2 – I would very much like to sign up for the classes, but I will have to miss a couple. Can I make up for the missed classes on the next series?
Answer – No. Once the series is over, you will have to sign up for a new one if you wish to attend more classes (or at least drop in at the very first class of the next series).
Q3 – How can we get an opportunity for practical application of all the exciting new steps we will learn?
Answer – At the end of each series, we will go out together at the monthly Anza Club “Africa Dance” party so you can show off your new dance moves!
Bikutsi - Traditional Dance from Cameroon with LIVE DRUMMING
Friday, May 21 - WOMEN ONLY
Time: 6 pm to 7:15 pm
Bikutsi is a dance and musical genre from Cameroon. The name indicates a dance that is accompanied by stomping the feet on the ground. The word Bikutsi can be loosely translated as beating the ground continuously.
Bikutsi is characterized by an intense 6/8 rhythm, and is played in all sorts of gatherings, including parties, funerals and weddings.
We will learn the basic movements of Bikutsi and build it up to more complex dance steps, and explore how we use the same step to create several variations. We will then practice a fun and uplifting choreography.

*POSTPONED to a later date* A new date will be scheduled and posted as soon as possible - Thank you for your understanding
Traditional Dance from Ghana with Juliet Kettor Men and women welcome! Unity Church – 5840 Oak street
Time: 6 pm to 8 pm
A 2-hour traditional dance workshop followed by a potluck. Warm-up and cool down by Jacky Essombe, followed by the following dance from Ghana:
ADZOGBO Adzogbo originated from Benin (Dahomey) as a Dzovu (religious music and dance). lt was called Dzovu. During the performance, the men participants would display their ''dzoka'' (charms) especially the so-called "love charms” to seduce women. When this music was brought to Togo and later Ghana in the late 19th century, its functions changed. The southeastern Ewe of Ghana now performs it for entertainment during festivals and other social occasions. Adzogbo is evenly divided into two sections depending on the occasion and the context in which it is to be performed. Through choreographed pieces and development, the dance has incorporated most of the contemporary movements that embrace unity and healing to members and preach love for each other. The women's’ section or phase of the dance is called ''Kadodo'' it brings artistic and intrinsic footwork and relief when it is performed. It is both performed by men and women.
Cost: $25 (pre-registration until 1pm on March 15) - $30 at the door
Where: Unity Church – 5840 Oak street
